Barnes Vanze Architects is known for translating clients’ needs into beautiful, livable spaces. Founders Anthony Barnes and Stephen Vanze, along with a talented team of architects and designers, create homes that reflect the owner’s tastes and values, while responding to the unique characteristics of the properties on which they’re built.

Even before the design process begins, “we strive to know our clients well as people,” Barnes says. “We look at how they live and their values. We are not selling a point of view, except that good design, regardless of style, is important.” Also important is an office-wide goal of giving back through educational and charitable community service projects.

Exposure to a range of cultures, styles and methods has informed both partners’ approach. “Our training—in school and in practice—as well as extensive travel experience, allows us to draw from a variety of inspirational sources,” Vanze observes.

It’s paid off: In 2015, a commission to revive a Flemish-style home on Washington’s Embassy Row received awards from AIA Northern Virginia, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Baltimore- Washington chapter.
